Apple announces iOS 12 for iPhone and iPad available to download on September 17th

Apple’s Phil Schiller announced Wednesday at Apple’s “Gather Round” event in Cupertino that iOS 12 will be available to download on Sept. 17.

iOS 12 includes numerous new features for iPhone and iPad users. Apple touts that one of its biggest focuses with the release is in regards to performance on older devices. Apps launch 40 percent faster, the keyboard appears 50 percent, and the camera opens up to 70 percent faster.

The new iPhone Xs, Xs Max and XR will ship with iOS 12, and it will be available to download on that date.

iOS 12 major new features:

  • Greatly improved Apple Maps
  • Improvements to the Photos app
  • Siri Shortcuts and Suggestions
  • Improvements to News, Stocks, Voice Memos, and Apple Books
  • Screen Time and Digital Health features
  • Big improvements to Notifications
  • New Animoji, Memoji, and filters in Messages
  • Group FaceTime chats
  • Augmented reality and the Measure app
  • CarPlay improvements including 3rd party maps
